Corel information and a brief history

It was founded in 1985 in Canada by Michael Cowpland as a research laboratory in the creative industry, infact the company name is an abbreviation of Cowpland Research Laboratory.

In 1989 it launched CorelDRAW, a graphic program that becaome very popular and brought success to the company that in 1996 bought Novell WordPerfect, a competitor of the famous Microsoft Word.

In 2000 the founder left the company for legal troubles. Other software were added to the company portfolio, for video makers, designers, photographers.

In 2012 Corel acquired Roxio and Pinnacle, other two multimedia companies; then a layoff and outsourcing period followed with various restructuring.

In July 2019 it was sold to KKR, an American investing company.
