Nikon has announced an upgrade to its professional D3 DSLR model: the D3s.

The hardware is basically the same except for a new sensor for achieving extremely high sensitivity. Let's see the major differences.

  • Luckily, no pixel increase (mega pixel race is often considered as quality race....), but impressive ISO range: base range is 200-12,800 and expanded up to 102,400.... this value sounds like a mistake, but it is correct. Hoping to see soon the noise at this extremely high sensitivity.
  • Video capture where competition with Canon is particulary though: 1,280 x 720 pixels at 24 frames per second in Motion JPEG AVI format (with in camera basic editing). Also a mono microphone is introduced for sound recording and a connector for an external stereo mic (very useful).
  • A new Quiet Shutter Release mode is introduced and a dedicated live view button.

The new Nikon D3s should be available by end of November for about $ 5,200.
