Nikon has announced the new entry-level D5000.

The main changes and features are the following:

  • 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (Nikon seems to have definitely joined the Canon way after having employed CCD sensors);
  • 4 frames per second burst rate, quite good qith comparison to Canon entry level;
  • 2.7 inch LCD with 233'000 pixels, not very good with current trend but... a vari-angle LCD! This is a very welcome addition from compact cameras, always wondered why DSLR couldn't have a detachable display for awkward shooting positions.
  • video capturing with resolution of 1280x720x24 fps (with mono audio), not the high definition like in Canon and up to 5 minutes with maximum resolution.
  • 100'000 cycle shutter life, good quality for an entry level.
  • of course live view (now a must), with face detection.

Initial price would be around 730 $ in the US and availability in a couple of weeks.
